This section includes homeownership rates and characteristics of household and family composition. It also examines the prevalence and severity of specific housing problems identified by HUD, which include incomplete kitchen and plumbing facilities, overcrowding and cost burden.
Section Highlights:
- Over two-thirds of Ohio householders (67%) own their homes between 2013 and 2017, which is above the national average of 64%.
- The most common household and family type for homeowners is married couples without children (39%), while the most common household type among renters is individuals living alone (42%).
- Roughly one in 40 renter households in Ohio (36,945 households) was considered overcrowded by HUD's standard of one person per room in the 2011–2015 five-year period.
- Nearly half of Ohio renters (46%) experienced at least one of four housing problems, as defined by HUD, including incomplete kitchen and plumbing facilities, overcrowding and housing cost burden.
- One in four renters in Ohio (26%) experienced more severe housing problems. ELI households were by far the most likely to experience severe housing problems (over 60%) regardless of tenure.
