Demographics

This section details the general population trends within Ohio. Population changes shape the demand of housing and provide insight into what types of housing are most needed. For example, a growing percentage of older adults means a need for accessible housing may be higher.

Section Highlights:

  • Ohio's population grew by 1.3% between 2010 and 2018. Much of this growth happened in suburbs (+2.0%), while urban cores and Appalachian counties saw a decline (–1.5% and –2.4% respectively).
  • Many older adults live alone; one out of every nine Ohio households – or over half a million – houses a single adult aged 65 or over, which adds substantial challenges to maintaining the cost and upkeep of a home.
  • White householders have a substantially higher rate of homeownership than all other racial categories (71.5% compared to a state average of 66.1%).
  • Half of all renter households with an older adult experienced one of four housing problems, as defined by HUD, including incomplete kitchen and plumbing facilities, overcrowding and housing cost burden.
  • Black and Hispanic renters are more likely (33% and 31% respectively) to experience severe housing problems than their white counterparts (23%).

Notes

Typologies are defined by the Kirwan Institute at the census tract level, and are based on a combination of road network density, housing density, population density and age of housing.

A "housing problem" indicates a household where housing costs exceed 30 percent of income, a housing unit has incomplete kitchen or plumbing facilities, or more than one occupant per room.

A "severe housing problem" indicates a household where housing costs exceed 50 percent of income, a housing unit has incomplete kitchen or plumbing facilities, or there are more than 1.5 occupants per room.

The foreign-born population includes anyone who was not a U.S. citizen at birth. It does not include people born in Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories or those born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR), refugees are people who have fled their country of origin to escape a war or due to a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, social status, or politics, and have been awarded special protective status. Only a small fraction of the world's refugee population is considered for final resettlement in the United States. The U.S. State Department then helps match refugees with local resettlement agencies around the country. Refugee arrivals count the number of refugees initially resettled in Ohio by the U.S. Department of State and do not reflect secondary migration.
