Notes

The U.S. Census Bureau defines an urban area as a contiguous area with a population density of 1,000 or more residents per square mile and at least 50,000 residents overall. By rule, every metropolitan statistical area (MSA) includes at least one urban area.

Census tract typologies are defined by the Kirwan Institute and are based on a combination of road network density, housing density, population density and age of housing.

Racially or Ethnically Concentrated Areas of Poverty (R/ECAPs) are census tracts where a majority of the population is non-white and/or Hispanic and the poverty rate is at least 40 percent or three times that of the metropolitan or micropolitan statistical area, whichever is lower.
