Holiday Preparation and Safety Tips 2024

Holiday Safety Tips

Happy holidays, Ohio! The holiday season can be busy and we want to provide you with tips to help make sure you have a happy, fun, and safe holiday season.

  1. Set light timers. If you're going out of town for the holidays, set up smart plugs around your home to light inside your dark house. Burglars are less likely to enter a home that appears occupied. Also, don't overload your electrical outlets and extension cords and replace string lights that are worn or have broken cords or loose bulb connections.
  2. Practice storage safety. If you must grab items from or place items on high shelves, keep a stable step stool available and avoid injury by splitting up large hauls into multiple trips. If you need to use a ladder, do not do it alone. Have someone steady the ladder and assist you.
  3. Don't forget to change your furnace filter. You can also improve the air quality in your house by cleaning and leaving on an air purifier.
  4. Water your greenery. Make sure to keep your greenery watered and at least three feet away from any source of heat. Dispose of your tree shortly after Christmas or when it becomes dry.
  5. Prep emergency kits for your home and vehicles. Have an emergency preparedness "go-kit" ready in case of power outages or you need a quick egress from your house! For your car, make sure you have the right supplies if you're stranded, such as blankets, candles, cell phone power bank, water, and non-perishable snacks — all of which will keep you and your passengers safe until help arrives. By planning ahead, you can have all the appropriate and necessary items gathered together as soon as you need them.

Holidays are a time to celebrate, and we at OHFA encourage you to do it safely.
