Insurance and Risk Management

Risk can be found everywhere and insurance offerings can be extremely complex. This session will demystify the insurance options for an owner of affordable housing, comparing traditional coverage to more complex offerings including captives and self-insured structures. The session will also highlight best practices and strategies related to assessing and managing risk across your portfolio.

Sheila Salisbury, NRP Group LLC
Based in Cleveland, Sheila Salisbury is a Risk Manager for The NRP Group covering all 15 markets and over 100 market-rate, senior and affordable communities identifying and mitigating risk across the organization. Sheila serves as the central hub for all community incident reports and general liability claims where she collaborates with multiple teams including property management and operations. She also works closely with NRP's risk management firm to ensure all claims are promptly reported to carriers. Sheila also supports the team as the Fair Housing Coordinator, handling all reasonable accommodation and modification requests and investigation of all complaints while serving as the liaison with legal counsel to prepare all related materials. With 18 years of experience in both risk management and insurance claims handling, Sheila's background includes auto, GL, med malpractice and product liability claims handling. Formerly, she was a claims and risk consultant for Riggs, Counselman, Michaels and Downes (RCM&D) in Baltimore. As a consultant, she provided superior customer service to all clients, including Erickson Retirement Communities LLC and Southern Maryland Hospital. Previously, she was a featured speaker at national conferences on behalf of RCM&D at American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) and The American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA). Over the course of her career, she has authored numerous articles and blogs for the Long-Term Care Currents and Aging Well periodicals. Sheila majored in political science Bowling Green University and holds a Master's of Business Administration from Baldwin Wallace with a concentration in management and marketing. Sheila also has insurance designations of ARM and CPHRM.


Tammy Rhiner, McCormack Baron Salazar Inc
Tammy Rhiner focuses on mitigating risk for the McCormack Baron Salazar companies, our communities and our clients. As Risk and Insurance Manager, Ms. Rhiner is responsible for analyzing, measuring, developing, implementing and effectively administering policies and processes to manage risk and ensure that the McCormack Baron Salazar companies, properties and clients are protected against unforeseen hazards. Her responsibilities include procuring insurance for all entities under the McCormack Baron Salazar umbrella, allocating premiums, and monitoring, controlling and managing losses. Ms. Rhiner serves as chairperson of the McCormack Baron Management risk committee and oversees the firm's Incident Reporting System. Ms. Rhiner joined the McCormack Baron Management team in 2007 as an executive-level assistant, where her responsibilities included supporting the president and vice presidents of the company, supervising office staff, and implementing special projects. In this role, she was instrumental in creating company policies and procedures and coordinating communication between the McCormack Baron Salazar companies. Prior to joining McCormack Baron Management, Ms. Rhiner served in broad-based administrator positions where her role included office management, new business development support, budgetary assistance, and general business support of day-to-day operations. She is a member of the national and local chapters of the Risk Management Society and anticipates being designated a Certified Risk Manager in 2019.

Michelle Kirda, Belfor Property Restoration
Michelle Kirda is a National Account Manager for Belfor Property Restoration who helps clients from all types of businesses manage their disasters and their risks by planning before an event and implementing simple risk reduction strategies. Before starting at Belfor Michelle received a Bachelor's degree from The University of Akron and spent eight years as a Certified Insurance Counselor and Broker for an independent insurance agency in Northeast Ohio. She is currently a licensed Insurance Agent in the State of Ohio and enjoys developing and teaching continuing education classes for licensed agents throughout the state.
